In February 2020, Dr. Luis Antonio Martinez Canales began an internship at Fredericksburg Equine and Small Animal Veterinary Services. He is from Granada, Nicaragua and studied veterinary medicine at the University of Commercial Sciences (UCC) in Managua. During his time at the university, he developed an interest in older patients, particularly older horses.  

Dr. Luis has worked in various veterinary positions including the medical side of an animal welfare project in Managua. Through the project, he met Dr. Franklin and expressed an interest gaining additional training in equine medicine. Dr. Franklin offered him a one-year internship, and Dr. Luis is proving to be a valuable member of the FESAVS team!

Currently, Dr. Luis’s primary professional interest is equine dentistry because it is “a fundamental part of the life of a horse.”  In his free time, he enjoys reading and walking long distances. He is a Christian and thanks God for the life and opportunities he has been given.
